The ethanolic extract of holy basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) attenuates atherosclerosis in high fat diet fed rabbit

Atherosclerosis is the etiology of coronary heart disease (CHD) that contributes to highest mortality rate non-communicable groups in Indonesia. The early stage this process marked by presence fatty streaks lesion artery wall. This study aimed investigate effect holy basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) suppress formation streak as previous prove reduced lipid levels, ROS, and inflammation after treated with extract. 25 adult male New Zealand rabbits age 4-month weight 2500-3000 g fed a high-fat diet (HFD) 10 mg/kgBW/day Holy Basil Extract (HBE), HBE, 50 HBE. negative control group was received only HFD. For experimental standard, one provided standard were included. measured aorta wall 45 days treatment immunohistochemistry method quantified using Image J software. results showed there no significant difference area between each (p > 0.05). Still, trend decreasing dose dependent manner (negative 5802.21+3690.41 µm2, P1 5154.69 + 3990.79 P2 4938.31 3690.18 P3 3611.68 4092.96 µm2) even though it not statistically paper conclude extract may exert anti-atherosclerosis inhibition through attenuation formation.
